June 2024 Human Performance Workshop

How do you perform at your best when it matters most? Nutrition, fitness, and recovery often take center stage in conversations around human performance—but one of the most overlooked and transformative pillars is mental performance under stress.   On June 2, 2024, I collaborated with Deep End Fitness Houston to host a human performance workshop.  This workshop was a powerful experience designed to help participants sharpen their mindset, build resilience, and perform under pressure.

We kicked off the workshop by diving into the fundamentals of breathwork, focusing on the connection between breathing patterns and nervous system regulation. Participants learned how rapid breathing accelerates the body’s stress response—and how slowing the breath can downshift the mind into a more calm and focused state. This skill becomes critical in high-pressure situations, especially in water, where stress often spikes and breath control becomes a lifeline.

Once grounded in breath, we moved into the pool for aquatic training—combining both surface and underwater movements to safely push mental and physical boundaries. One of the core drills was underwater bobbing, where participants practiced taking efficient breaths at the surface and staying calm while submerged. From there, we layered in dynamic exercises designed to challenge composure, awareness, and control under physical strain—hallmarks of elite mental performance.

We closed the day with contrast therapy, combining cold plunges and sauna sessions as a final opportunity to apply breathwork under different forms of physical stress. The cold plunge demanded presence and calm in discomfort, while the heat of the sauna offered a different kind of reset—enhancing circulation, mental clarity, and recovery. The pairing allowed guests to experience both the edge and the ease of stress, turning external challenge into internal mastery.

Throughout the day, there was camaraderie, laughter, and meaningful growth. Participants didn’t just leave with a great workout—they left with practical tools for navigating stress, building resilience, and stepping more fully into their potential. This is what human performance is really about: learning to respond, not react, when the pressure’s on.
