July 2023 : Healthy Houston Saturday

On July 22, 2023, I hosted Healthy Houston Saturday in collaboration with local Houston nutrition expert Casey Barbles.  Our goal : show that living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. The goal was simple but powerful: help people of all fitness and health levels experience firsthand how easy and enjoyable it can be to start their weekend with intention, movement, nourishment, and community.

We began the day outdoors with an all-levels yoga session led by Nick Zogg of Valor Yoga. Surrounded by trees, flowers, and the natural beauty of the poolside setting, participants moved through a gentle yet invigorating yoga flow. This session brought together the benefits of physical movement, mindful breathwork, and sun exposure—all while grounding ourselves in nature. Whether someone was a beginner or experienced practitioner, the session provided a welcoming environment for everyone to reconnect with their body and mind.

After yoga, guests enjoyed a refreshing drink to rehydrate and reset before moving indoors for the second part of the experience: a hands-on nutrition workshop. Local food expert and nutritionist Casey Barbles led the session, sharing practical guidance on how to source and prepare healthy meals using fresh, plant-based ingredients. With her experience running several farmers markets in Houston, Casey offered deep insights into why locally grown, seasonal produce is often more nutrient-dense and flavorful than store-bought alternatives.

Casey didn’t just speak about healthy eating—she demonstrated it. Guests gathered around the kitchen as she walked through a few simple, nutritious recipes, showing just how quick and accessible healthy food prep can be. Participants had the chance to ask questions, taste ingredients, and learn tips for turning whole, unprocessed ingredients into satisfying meals. The focus wasn’t on restriction or perfection, but on quality, ease, and connection to what we eat.

Once the dishes were prepared, everyone shared a healthy meal together. It wasn’t just about feeding the body—it was about sharing the experience of nourishment, intention, and community. The atmosphere was upbeat and inclusive, filled with people curious about wellness and open to learning from each other. Whether someone came for the yoga, the food, or the community, they walked away with valuable tools and inspiration to bring back into their daily routine.

Healthy Houston Saturday proved that wellness can be simple, social, and deeply fulfilling. From mindful movement to whole-food nourishment, every element of the event was designed to empower attendees with real-life practices they could take home. The morning served as a powerful reminder that small, consistent choices—like starting your weekend with movement and good food—can make a meaningful impact on your long-term health and happiness.
